'Tender Buttons' is a short book by Gertrude Stein. The book consists of multiple poems covering the everyday mundane, Stein's experimental use of language renders the poems unorthodox and their subjects unfamiliar. 'Tender Buttons' has provoked divided critical responses since its publication. It is renowned for its Modernist approach to portraying the everyday object and has been lauded as a "masterpiece of verbal Cubism".

This book assaulted expectations and when just read through, cover to cover, left me very pleased. This was the first major literary work that I read that doesn't try and communicate something specific to me. Instead it is more of a reading experience, one simply experiences the act of reading when reading this, with the standard ways of communicating in text severed. The text is vary associative to me, and it seems to wander around what would be the obvious thing to say and instead is avoids saying it directly, and brings up associations around it. This book left me able to enjoy an experience oriented reading that I never could before. Its a tough read. I was not accustomed to reading something an not having every aspect of it click, and if it didn't rereading the passage. This is very different, it is reading the passage and not looking for it to click, its reading it for what it is, even if on the surface it doesnt make sense, and then slowly absorbing the complex web of associations.Product details

I bought this for my , because I couldn't find my hard copy--which I've read many times. I am a strong appreciator of what Gertrude Stein did for poetry. Reading her work takes perseverance and dialogue with other lit-addicts.
if you enjoyed Naked Lunch by William S Borroughs then you'd enjoy this. still very thought provoking and fresh after all these years.
IT'S VERY GOOD A BIT DIFFERENT
The quality of this book is a disgrace to this amazing and groundbreaking work by Gertrude Stein in terms of how it was printed and bound. Although the cover is lovely, the inside basically looks like someone typed up the manuscript on their computer, failed to format anything, printed a copy on their printer and then glued it together. The typeface is downright unsightly. The vignette titles are not even in boldface. Even worse, there are absolutely no spaces between the vignettes. A total disappointment. Needless to say, I am returning the book and demanding my money back.
A review. That a review might, away
Away to keep sending and ringing.
To sway, in wind or water or that
Coy magnetism 'round friendly
One's opinion of such pillar,
Such oligarch.
Are you ready for nonsense? Think "magic eye" in text form. Stein, who influenced Picasso to "let go," takes readers through a series of subjective, objectionable, temporal relationships among the things we might see everyday. Does it all mean something? Find out for yourself. Is it fun to read out loud? You betcha!
Maybe not for children trying to learn English 😂
Plenty of others have reviewed this book under one of its other published variations. The free-word expression style Stein uses can be quite off putting. The reality is there doesn't seem to be any sense or rhyme in any of this book unless you, the reader, make some up.
My favorite line, taken out of context, is "... it is so earnest to have green not to point red but to point again." Personally I see a lot in that line, though, admittedly, not placed in the context of the rest of the sentence it resides within.
Another I have been finding meaning in is "A bag which was left and not taken but turned away was not found. The place was shown to be very like the last place. A piece was not exchanged, not a bit if it, a piece was left over. The rest was miss managed."
Almost the entirety of the rest of the book just seems to be words written down in a row with no meaning and not relationship to each other, but, to be honest I haven't read the entire book, especially the longer prose which I haven't been able to sit through. Most of what I have read reminds me of that feeling one gets after having stopped reading a lengthy section of a book because one realizes one wasn't paying attention, and, although one was reading every single word, one wasn't getting a single bit of understanding or remembrance from it.
This is the type of book that you need to keep around and every once in a while go back to in order to try to find another small item that you can gain some understanding from, otherwise, on one reading, it is just so much pre new age Modernistic trash.
Don't expect the book cover to look like the one advertised here. I bought this as a holiday gift and it came with a plain blue cover. When I called to complain, sent a new one...and it was the same exact one with the plain blue cover. I called again and was told a manager would contact the manufacturer. Haven't heard back yet.
The book itself is wonderful if you love poetry and Gertrude Stein. The false advertising is disappointing.
