The Indian Drum William Briggs MacHarg 9781290141956 Books

"The Indian Drum" is the kind of book you would find on a small bookshelf in that old northern Michigan summer lake cottage your family vacationed at when you were a child; a book seen but rarely read. It is a corny, melodramatic, adventure/romance. The coincidences in the novel strain credulity. The writing isn't great, but it is an enjoyable read that gives a feel for the business and hazards of shipping on the Great Lakes and a portrait of Chicago in the early 20th C. The title is taken from the "legend" of the mysterious drum heard in the forests along the shore of Lake Michigan when a ship goes down. The Indian Drum counts out the number of souls taken by the lake.

I guess you could call "The Indian Drum" a guilty pleasure. I LOVED IT. I've recommended the book to several people and they enjoyed the book, too. Since the book is free, there's no risk in trying it.

One criticism of this Kindle version...it does not include the frontispiece illustration by W.T. Benda, though the caption is there, "As Constance started away, Spearman suddenly drew her back and kissed her." The Kindle version available at Gutenberg.org does include the illustration. It's a minor quibble.

The Indian Drum William Briggs MacHarg 9781290141956 Books Reviews

Indian Drum is my favorite book. My mother introduced me to it when I was young child, but was not allowed to read it until I was much older and respected books. It takes place in a time of big money, great building and gentile manners, which may make it boring to some. It is a mystery story of family and if course the Indian drum. For you Michiganers you I'll recognize many cities and places. I have a 1917 copyand treat it like gold. If you visit Mackinaw Island, Michigan you will find a nice little shop named Indian Drum after the book. Sorry they do not sell fudge.
Had a home in northern Emmet county on Lake Michigan. Authors descriptions of native lore and lake traditions was spot on. Nice read.
This has been a favorite book in our family for years and I was delighted to find it on . The original 1911 (I think) version is too fragile to reread. Set in both Chicago and Northern Michigan of the early 20th Century this book reminds the reader of the importance of the Great Lakes in the development of the mid-west, the power of myth, and the tenacity of the human spirit. Its also a good romance and mystery. If you love history, social history, the great lakes, and Chicago, give this oldie but goodie a try.
Beautifully written and suspenseful, this narrative includes stirring scenes of Great Lakes boatsmanship and the terrors of a mind divided against itself. The romance is mature and satisfying.
The story is great. I have an original copy. I bought another copy for friends to borrow. The font in this copy is ridiculously small. I can hardly read it even while wearing reading glasses. I recommend the book-just not this version!
I am reading this again after a few years time because I remembered how much I enjoyed it. Knowing the ending I am still enjoying every page. And I am from Michigan !
I really enjoyed this older novel, with its theme of shipping on the Great Lakes. It had a Gothic flair and a good, gripping mystery reminiscent of The Turn of the Screw and Jane Eyre. I was surprised to find it quite a bit longer than modern novels I've read on my . I highly recommend this book; although the characters are more innocent than today's and you aren't going to find any sex scenes, I enjoyed the relatively innocent romantic aspects.
